Mt. Shasta and the Milky Way...

Noted photographers J. Gunther, Mike Hupp and I had a wonderful opportunity to join Astro-Photographer Extraordinaire Brad Goldpaint for an all-night photo shoot, chasing the Milky Way around Mt. Shasta. We covered 215 miles in 9 hours and made a complete circumnavigation of the mountain while Brad put us in the right place at the right time to come away with some fantastic images.

Here are some of the fruits of the evening...

The Milky Way over Mt. Shasta, shortly after sunset...

A little later, the colors change and the earth rotates...

From the east, the Milky Way looks like smoke rising from the ancient volcano...

This was my first foray in Astro-Photography and I can tell you now I am hooked. Not an easy task to focus in near zero light but we managed under the patient instruction of Brad whose planning and coordination put us in the optimal spot at each stop to capture the Milky Way and Mt. Shasta in the perfect composition!

Take care all and here's to good light...

Redwood National Park...

Nana and I had the opportunity to photograph in Redwood National Park. Her girlfriend Julie, who was visiting, joined us. We headed over early in the day, hoping for fog and balanced light in the forest. No such luck...got just a hint along the way. Here are some images from the trip...

Deep in the redwoods along Howland Hill Road...

What little fog there was lit by the sun as it peeked through the trees, south of Crescent City...

Redwoods are REALLY tall!

Redwoods and Ferns, near Stout Grove...

Deep in the canopy along Howland Hill Road...

Even without the lighting I hoped for, the day was productive and fun!

Take care all...

Crater Lake Sunset / Moonrise...

Nana and I had the opportunity to head up to Crater Lake National Park in southern Oregon for the full moon rising on Saturday, August 13th, 2011. It was a beautiful afternoon and we explored around the rim drive before settling in at our chosen spot for the sunset. We were surprised to see how much snow was still around the lake given the fact it was the middle of August!

Here are some of the fruits of our efforts...

Vidae Falls and Lupine...

Lupine along the southern rim...

Lot's of snow around still...

The full moon rose at the perfect time just after sunset...

The earth's shadow provided a great colored sky...

The last bit of light before it faded away...

The actual sunset behind us was beautiful as well...

A perfect evening for photography...

John Muir Wilderness...

I had the opportunity to backpack into the John Muir Wilderness in the High Sierra, outside Bishop, California. My goal was to photograph Ruby Lake at both sunrise and sunset, as well as the picturesque mountains and valleys in the area. Although I got hammered with major thunderstorms, the post-storm light was amazing. Here are some fruits of my efforts...

High Sierra tarn, along the Mono Pass trail...

Sunset rays over the crest above Ruby Lake...

Post sunset light over Ruby Lake...

Although a quick trip, it was well worth the effort to view the magical light of the High Sierra...

Take care all...
